With spiritual practices like yoga and meditation becoming more popular, it seems like everyone is talking about mantras. But what exactly is a mantra and how are you supposed to use it?
Come and learn what a mantra is and what it is not.
Spoiler alert: A mantra is not an affirmation. In this class, we will explore and play with the most powerful Sanskrit/Gurmukhi magic words in the world. We will be focusing on the ancient sound combinations practiced in Kundalini yoga and meditation.
The word mantra can be broken down into two parts: “man,” which means mind, and “tra,” which means to tune. In other words, a mantra is an instrument of the mind—a powerful sound or vibration that you can use to “tune into” and energize your intention.
Like a seed planted with the intention of blossoming into a beautiful flower, a mantra can be thought of as a seed for energizing an intention. Much in the same way you plant a flower seed, you plant mantras in the fertile soil of practice. You nurture them and over time they bear the fruit of your intention.

Marianne Altschul, MSW, RYT is a clinical social worker, mindful life coach, group facilitator, adjunct professor, yoga and meditation teacher. Marianne has been studying the effects of stress on the body-mind for over 25 years. Her research interest has been in non-pharmacologic approaches to stress, pain and worry management.
Marianne has been studying the effects of stress on the body-mind for over 25 years. Her clinical research began in New York City as an HIV/AIDS hospital social worker in the 90s. She has worked with individuals with life threatening and terminal illnesses in multiple AIDS centers, trauma programs and burn units. Her research interest has been in non-pharmacologic approaches to stress, pain and worry management.
